Though having the most powerful engines, the bombers were usually heaviest and thus slowest. The length and wingspan of the bombers was immense compared to many observation planes and most, if not all, pursuit planes. Their size and lack of agility made them vulnerable to enemy fighters, which is why friendly pursuit planes escorted them.
